THE CANTERBURY JAZZ MASS

By Theodicy Jazz Collective

Roles: Principal Composer | Creative Director | Lead Saxophonist

The Project:

A large-scale reimagining of the traditional Latin mass, engineered for a jazz octet and choir. Operating as the primary composer and arranger, I generated ninety percent of the structural material. The architecture of the piece seamlessly fuses rigorous, high-church classical frameworks with jazz improvisation, Afro-Caribbean rhythms, hip-hop, and the resilient, soulful spirit of blues and swing.

The Execution:

As Creative Director, my role was to bridge these distinct musical worlds through high-level multicultural arranging—revealing the common ground between the traditions while fiercely honoring their unique identities. The embedded selections demonstrate the scope of this project, while my primary work on the saxophone captures the integration in real-time, proving that fusing these vocabularies unlocks a boundless range of spiritual expression.
